MEIMEH (MEYMEH), also called MAYMEH or JOSHEGAN, is around 61 km(38 miles) north of Isfahan in Central Iran. Here is where you can find literally the best hand-woven Persian tribal rugs. At one time, Joshegan pieces were considered the finest Persian pieces until the Afghans took over Meymeh in 1722. Now it is much more rare to find a high quality Joshegan than a high quality Meimeh. The same precise techniques are used today for Meimeh pieces as they were used centuries ago. Meimeh (Meymeh) rugs and carpets have geometric patterns. The designs are similar to Qashqai and other geometric tribal rugs. In design, they have a single diamond-shaped medallion and many other smaller diamond-shaped medallions in the background. On this most used design, the intricately detailed borders may feature dense floral designs. Another popular design includes a hexagonal medallion with four hooks surrounded by hundreds of small geometric and animals motifs throughout the field. The geometric animal and bird motifs are used simultaneously as part of the repeat patterns and as the filler ornaments. These rugs and carpets generally are of superb quality. However, there is a fine line in distinguishing quality. The finer pieces are known as Maymeh and the average pieces are just known as Joshegan. They come in different sizes, but the majority of them are mid-sized ranging with dimensions from 4x6 to 8x10 feet. Dark reds and bold blues are the predominant colors, while ivories and blacks form a beautiful contrast. Other colors such as soft greens, blues, and browns are found in the newer pieces. These rugs and carpets are usually comprised of a soft wool with a thick, durable pile. The warps of the foundation are mostly cotton and the wefts are wool. Meimeh(Meymeh) weavers use very dense, Persian knots. The knot count average is around 120 KPSI or 30 RAJ. Meimeh rugs and carpets are fairly pricey due to the fact that they are high in demand and very rare. They are high in demand because they will last for centuries. Little or no care is even needed in order to maintain these rugs. In addition, these rugs traditionally come in colors that are suitable for most color schemes in one's home. In conclusion, Meimeh rugs and carpets are elegant, durable, and complementary to most expectations.
