The city of KERMAN is in southeastern Iran and has a long history of carpet weaving. It is located in the center of Kerman province, 1022 km(635 miles) southeast of Tehran. The population of Kerman is around 2 million (Kerman City: 340,000). Kerman has a hot and dry summer and a very cold and dry winter. Kerman is an ancient city and was called BOTIA during the Achaemenid Dynasty. It is a center of trade in the region and is accessible from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea ports by railway and highway. Kerman has many historical sites such as:
• Public Baths
• Ebrahim Khan Madreseh
• Bagheh-e-Shazdeh(Prince)
Kerman carpets are highly prized because of the quality of their design and colors. They are made of fine, lustrous wool, colored with soft reds, greens, blue, yellows and ivories. Carpets from Kerman have been appreciated by western collectors for many years. They are particularly famous for having a single medallion with an arabesque form called the Eski-Kerman. There are, however, many different designs in Kerman carpets and rugs. Another common famous design is the "Tree of Life" which is taken from Lavar pieces that generally are styled with gardens, vases, and all-over mille fleur designs. In addition many pictorials which tell the story of a significant figure or event in history is used commonly. The traditional pattern of a Kerman, however, has a central medallion that is intricately-detailed with an ornate, architectural ,or floral theme against the palest pastels with a white-and-gold trim. These carpets and rugs are of very high quality, just as Tabriz and Isfahan. Kerman is famous for producing large-sized carpets up to 10x18 feet, but smaller sizes are available as well. Cranberry reds and navy blues are the primary colors in the older pieces. Newer rugs, however, consist of the following colors: turquoises, oranges, champagnes, and beiges. Altogether, interestingly enough, almost 30 colors are used in one rug at a time. They are made of wool and have a thin and very well textured pile. The warp of the foundation is cotton while the the pile is made of wool. Though possible, it is very rare to find a silk Kerman rugs or carpets. Rugs and carpets from Kerman have very tight foundations and the knots are Persian. Kerman carpets are very beautiful. There is a very high demand for these rugs and carpets around the world due to their exquisite colors and quality thus, they are a little more expensive than similar carpets from surrounding areas.
