ZANJAN is a city in northwestern Iran. Zanjan township is 328 km(203 miles) from Tehran. Enjoying a mild weather in summer and cold weather in winter, Zanjan is composed of two great valleys formed by two rivers, "ZANJAN Rood" and "SEFRID Rood," between which the Gharavol and Angooran mountains are located. Zanjan ("dear wife" in FARSI) produces many beautiful Persian tribal rugs, all handmade by nomadic Persian tribes living in northwestern Iran. The colors of these rugs are usually very bright and lively. Their quality is very good and the rugs last a long time. An authentic Zanjan Persian rug is an ideal way to add something exotic to a room that could use some flavor. The foundation of Zanjan dates back to the region of Ardeshir Babakan, when it was called "Shahin" or "Shahan." In time, its name was changed to Hodood-Olalam or "Limits of the World." In 372 AH (982 CE), it was described as a flourishing and blessed city with very strong fortifications. Zanjan was badly damaged by a Mongol attack, but in the region of Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh, a famous Mongolian ruler also known as Oljaito, the city of Sultanieh (later Zanjan) was made the largest capital of the Ilkhani government and Islamic land. By the order of Oljaito, a fortification was constructed around Sultanieh and a huge castle was build in its midst. He built a cemetery with a high dome (the famous Khodabandeh Dome) for himself. Sultanieh became one of the most important cities of Ilkanan (after Tabriz) in the region of Oljaito. Oljaito's cemetery was badly damaged by Taymour the lame after the fall of Ilkhanan in 786 AH (1227 CE). Sultanieh fell into decadence in the time of Shah Tahmas Safavid I (930-984 AH/1523-1576) Fath Ali Shah (the Qajar King, 1797-1834 CE) built a summer palace in this city. Today, as the result of the political and administrative conditions and a concentration of several provincial organizations, its population is growing, causing development. The important natural, historical, and religious sights of Zanjan are as follows:
• Several mineral water springs
• Angooran Protected Area
• Zolfaghari edifice
• Zanjan fortification
• Shemiran, Sansiz and Sati castles
• Golshan and Malek caravansaries
• Old public bathes
• Historical building of Rakhtshooi Khaneh (wash- house)
• Several historical bridges
• Historical caves of Galijak and Kharmaneh Sar
• Jame. Mospues of Seyed Mirzai and Gholayr
• Imamzadeh Seyed Ibrahim.
Carpets from Zanjan usually have a look and visage similar to those of the Bijar. This fact causes confusion even among experts. Zanjan's carpets usually have larger patterns than Bijar. They are single-wefted in the center. The quality of Zanjan carpets varies, but they are of lower quality than Bijar. In general, they are good rugs with cheaper prices.
Zanjan carpets come in different sizes, but the majority of them are mid-size (4x 6 to 8x10 feet). You can also find large rugs up to 10x18 feet. The predominant colors include:dark reds, browns and light blues. Zanjan rugs and carpets are made of wool and/or cottonand have a tight pile. The warps of the foundation are mostly cotton; the wefts are either cotton or wool. Weavers in Zanjan use both Persian and Turkish knots. Zanjan carpets are among the most affordable Persian carpets
