In southern Iran, down the road from Shiraz to Isfahan, lies the town of ABADEH. Abadeh is known for its many historical castles. Marquetry and the making of givehs (light cotton summer shoes), woodcarving, and carpet weaving are also its major highlights. In addition, Abadeh is also a trade center for grain and fruit growing in the region. Sesame oil and castor oil are produced there. If you're looking to visit, Abadeh has a suitable hotel for tourists. In reference to Abadeh's carpets, they have a unique design called Heybatlu. The Heybatlu design is described as having a single diamond-shaped medallion in the center with four smaller motifs at each corner. These motifs make the design easy to distinguish. The medallion encloses a number of stylized, geometrical animal, flower, and bird patterns. This very distinctive design has virtually remained unchanged for decades. This design is influenced by the Arab and Qashqai tribes. The flat-woven style knot is influenced by the Qashqai women. These rugs are classified as village rugs because of the fact that they are woven in the village on smaller looms. These looms are usually kept in the living room or main bedroom in which it can take from months up to one or two years to complete a rug, depending on its size. The quality of Abadeh carpets is very fine. Abadeh carpets come in different sizes but, the majority of them are mid-sized ranging from 4x6 to 8x10 feet. Abadeh also makes runners extending up to 16 feet. The colors are vegetable-dyed in which the predominate colors include: light reds, dark blues, and bright greens. Furthermore, the corner colors are usually ivory or white. These pieces are made of wool and have a thin, and very well textured pile. The warp of the foundation is made of cotton while the pile is made of wool. These pieces are very firm and closely knotted. Abadeh carpets are very beautiful and are in high demand due to their intriguing colors, designs, and fine weaves making them more expensive than similar carpets from the surrounding areas.
