Shirvan rugs are included in a group of Azerbaijani carpets. The name is related with Kurdemir Area, which is located 55 kilometers far from Shamakhy (at the south-east direction). The shirvan rugs are also made in another districts of the region, and besides in Sor-Sor, Shilyan, Muradhanly, Mollakende, and in Garhun*, that is located 16 kilometers from Yevlakh. But irrespective of a place of manufacture, the carpet refers as "Kurdemir". The composition of shirvan rug is considered as one of the oldest carpet models of Northern Azerbaijan. The composition of the central field of the Shirvan carpets "Kurdemir" has polygonal oblong Gols (Medallions). These gols are executed by broken lines and are placed on vertical axes. Directed aside from the Gols there is an additional ornament Jagee. Star-shaped elements are located between jags and this is the main artistic feature of the carpet. Shirvan Rugs have got a romb gear-shaped medallion in the central field, which was peculiar to ancient Gabala carpets. (Gabala was the capital of Ancient Alban State, which was existed from 4th century BC until 7th century AD, for 1100 years in the territory of Northern Azerbaijan. The pile on shirvan rugs is pure lamb wool and the warsps and wefts are usually wool. The main colors are: red, mustard, light brown, beige, forest green, aqua blue, dark blue (Naturally dyed) Kurdemir carpets are considered as one of the best of Shirvan Carpets.
